Top Employee Time Killers

“Time is money”, Benjamin Franklin once said. In the contemporary world, where every second matters, time management couldn’t be more crucial.

Have you been wondering if your employees are working all day?

According to recent statistics, the average American worker wastes more than two working hours every day, costing business owners $750 billion annually. A prominent 64 % of the research participants admitted that they surf the Internet for non-work related purposes every day. Not to mention the ones who did not admit it.

But more shockingly, nearly 50% of Americans who took part in the survey admitted that they even spend time looking for a new job while being at their current workplace.

Some Statistics

According to the statistics, 69% of men tend to waste their time at work, compared to 62% of women. In terms of age, workers in their 26-35s are holding the first place for wasting work time on a daily basis, followed by the 18 to 25 age group, who usually put more efforts to make good impression at the beginning of their career. Unsurprisingly, older workers aged 56 and above are least likely to engage in non-work related issues at the workplace.

Another interesting fact is the relation between the level of education and misuse of working hours. Research shows that nearly 70% of PhD graduates tend to misuse work hours, compared to only 60% of high school graduates. This could be explained with the fact that the latter usually occupy lower positions in the hierarchy, which stimulated them to work hard and do their best in order to get promoted and win a better position in the company.

So What Are Your Employees Doing Instead Of Working?

1. Socializing With Colleagues – most research participants admitted they tend to “socialize” with their co-workers on a daily basis. Going out for a cigarette, discussing the weekend or the last football game, or simply discussing office gossip, employees often engage in non-work related conversations. And while most businesses spend hundreds of dollars for teambuilding activities and HR practices to make their employees closer, this could be a significant drain on corporate time.

2. Surfing Social Media Sites – Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and other social sites are another powerful time consuming activity employees often engage with. The first position is held by Facebook, with almost 50% of workers admitting they check their Facebook account from work every day.

3. Personal Business – Besides from Facebook and Twitter, employees often use their work time to check their personal emails, pay their bills, buy presents, or simply make personal phone calls or send text messages. This trend is most typical for married couples and families with children, as they tend to make frequent phone calls to their beloved ones.

4. Frequent and/or long breaks – workers often tend to extend their breaks, arrive a few minutes late or leave a few minutes early. And while this may seem an insignificant “few minutes”, it can significantly decrease productivity and result in several lost work hours every week.

5. Unnecessary or ineffective meetings – nearly 50% of workers report they frequently have an excessive and/or unproductive meetings just because “they have to”. An example are the regular operational meetings, which often consume up to several hours of employee time which could be spend on more important business issues.
